To the lady whose son lost his thumb:

Once the swelling goes down, I would think my thumb will be almost twice as "long". I don't know how much of the thumb your son lost, but I lost almost all of mine. I have nothing above the knuckle. I don't think I ever measured its length before surgery, but I'd guess it was about an inch long before. There is also the bone lengthening procedure. I've been told that is pretty excruciating pain.
